Kuehne & Nagel , the global forwarding and logistics provider, has announced that it has entered into close collaboration with a medium-sized German logistics provider, WM Group. By acquiring a 40% stake in WM’s groupage and full load subsidiary, WM Cargonet, Kuehne & Nagel will strengthen its European overland operations.

At the same time it has also developed its contract logistics business in eastern Germany through the acquisition of two WM facilities at Chemnitz and Leipzig . These will be integrated into K&N’s existing network in the region which includes operations in Berlin ,Dresden and Erfurt .

Germany has been targeted by Kuehne & Nagel as a key market for strategic growth. In recent weeks it has also acquired Pracht, the former contract logistics subsidiary of Hapag Lloyd and it also owns Stute Verkhers.

WM Group has in the past entered into other cooperations and networks. It is part of the Globalliance network which includes UK distribution company Bibby. It is also a key part of the Elix overland freight network which includes DFDS and Geodis. The future development of the relationship between Kuehne & Nagel and its European rivals within the Elix network should be interesting to watch.
