Cooperation between MAV AG and Stinnes permits operation of nonstop trains
(Budapest/ Berlin, August 4, 2004) The efforts made by the Hungarian national railroad corporation, MAV AG, and Stinnes AG to speed up and simplify rail freight traffic bound for southeastern Europe have begun to bear fruit. Only half a year after the establishment of a joint association in autumn 2003, all AUDI logistics trains operated by Schenker Automotive Railnet GmbH now travel between Györ and Ingolstadt without change of locomotives. In addition, the three trains per day that travel from and to Hungary via Austria do not have to wait at the borders because they have been qualified as "reliable trains" since the beginning of May. This has reduced the travel time per train by approximately three hours. Customers fully benefit from this faster service because it gives them more time to load and unload their cargo. In Györ, for instance, the loading deadline has been extended from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Similar improvements in train travel times are currently being prepared for the route via the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The purpose of such cooperation is to improve the competitiveness of railroad corporations in cross-border freight transportation. The importance of this topic has grown in the recent past, especially since the European Union’s eastern enlargement on May 1, 2004.
The primary objectives pursued by MAV and Stinnes with their new association are to build up joint train systems, to introduce common freight car scheduling plans including neighboring countries, and to purchase services from each other.
With its four business segments – Schenker, Railion, Freight Logistics and Intermodal – Stinnes combines logistics competence with rail know-how in the fields of land transportation, air and sea freight, as well as global supply chain management. With a sales volume of 11.5 billion euros, a workforce of 65,000 employees and a network of approx. 1,100 locations in all the major economic regions, the company is one of the leading transportation and logistics service providers worldwide. Stinnes is a company of Deutsche Bahn AG.
