The first services for 9'6" containers have commenced following the completion of major engineering work from the Port of Felixstowe. (10/15/2004)

Both Freightliner and GB Railfreight have immediately taken advantage of the improved capability of the rail network from Felixstowe by running services for the larger containers to the Midlands, North West and Scotland.

The 18-month project to enhance the rail network that allows unhindered movement of 9'6" containers on standard rail equipment was funded by SRA as part of their gauge enhancement program and delivered by Network Rail. It was completed early and, at £30 million, significantly under budget.

Commenting on the opening, Phil McGrath, Business Development director at GB Railfreight, said: “It will give shippers a wider range of economic and efficient services - and that's good news for them.”

Following the opening, Freightliner has announced a further 6 trains a week from the port, and plans for services specifically targeted at 9'6" markets.

Castelguelfo shuttle offers new Italian connections
On September 6th, Stinnes Freight Logistics went operational with its first STINNESrailport in Italy, at Castelguelfo near Parma. (10/21/2004)

The Railport system enables both forwarders and recipients without their own siding to convey goods of all types by rail.

“This is rail access made simple for customers coming from all industrial sectors,” says Frank Schuhholz, head of Logistics Services at Stinnes Freight Logistics. “This is because we draw up a complete all-round offer, comprising the main run by rail, subsequent transshipment and transport by road, so that the organisation of the entire operation is supplied by a single source.”

The Castelguelfo STINNESrailport is linked to the German single freight car network by three pairs of trains a week. For shipments to Italy, the freight cars are brought together and assembled in Offenburg. Return shipments to the north are separated in Mannheim, and so fed into the single freight car network.

Freight cars of the shuttle service that leave Offenburg for Italy at 17h55 are standing ready to be unloaded at 09h00 the following morning. The train going in the opposite direction starts at around 09h00 and reaches Mannheim at 05h00 the following day. In the past the sorting and switching of the freight cars in Italy was a lengthy operation.

“These days, now,” Schuhholz explains, “we only change the locomotives at the crossing of the frontier. Our customers benefit from the shorter transit time, there is transport monitoring throughout and they are in a better position to plan their shipments.”

Railion Deutschland, Stinnes AG’s rail freight company, is responsible for traction services within Germany. When the trains leave Germany, the Swiss company BLS Cargo and the Italian FNC take over.

Castelguelfo STINNESrailport offers customers additional logistical services, such as warehousing or buffering. At the discretion of the recipient, shipments can be delivered either immediately following the arrival of the train in Castelguelfo or else when called for. Partial deliveries are also an option.

Stinnes is already making further plans for continuing to upgrade its Railport network in Italy, including direct connections to Verona and the area around Milan.
