Dutch railways and ports of Rotterdam & Amsterdam to jointly operate Betuweroute
ProRail, the inframanager of the Dutch railways, and the port authorities of Rotterdam and Amsterdam will jointly operate the Betuweroute, the dedicated freight railway from Rotterdam to Germany.

The authorities have signed a new agreement that includes the setting up of a joint venture for the next five years. The participants will put all their market and logistic knowledge, skills and experience into the new company (BREM, BetuweRoute Exploitatie Maatschappij) to make the venture as successful as possible.

The port authorities will take a 50% share in the new company and ProRail the other 50%.

The three directors of the companies involved, Hans Smits (Rotterdam), Hans Gerson (Amsterdam) and Bert Klerk (ProRail), stress the joint nature of the BREM. “In this joint venture, the emphasis is on the fact that we want to make the Betuweroute a logistic and commercial success together. We are satisfied with the agreement and determined to make the Betuweroute a success in the next five years.” It has also been agreed that ProRail and the port authorities will actively look for commercial partners who are prepared and in a position to support the port authorities in their role, and take over partly.

To this end, the port authorities are willing to reduce their shares of 35% (Rotterdam) and 15% (Amsterdam) to 5% each within the foreseeable future. The other 40% of the BREM could then become the property of one or more commercial companies.

Compared to the earlier operating plan, the Port of Rotterdam Authority will increase its financial investment to a maximum of €10 million and the Port of Amsterdam to a maximum of €3 million.

For the next five years, the parties have agreed to work on the basis of the tariffs recently proposed by the Minister of Transport, Public Works & Water Management for rail freight.
