Taking a stake in one of China’s biggest RoRo terminals

2007-07-25
Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics has taken a 15% stake in a new RoRo terminal in the Port of Tianjin. The move recognises the importance of China as a growing market economy and a major force in automotive manufacturing.

The new $98 million USD terminal, to be owned by TPG Global RO-RO Terminal Co Ltd, is a three-way venture with Wallenius Wilhelmsen Terminals North AB, Tianjin Port Stock Co Ltd (51 per cent) and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha in Tianjin (34 per cent). TPG has the rights to operate the terminal for 30 years with an option to extend the term. Tianjin is the largest port in North China.
Designed to handle upwards of 500,000 vehicles a year, the new 296 000 m2 terminal will incorporate two RoRo berths for cars, high and heavy RoRo equipment and static cargoes.
It is being built to meet the increasing demands for RoRo and vehicle traffic expansion in China and the increasing importance of the Port of Tianjin as the prime hub for North East China, handling domestic as well as import/export related cargo.
Construction of the new terminal, situated in Tianjin Port’s North Harbour, is due to start by the end of July or in early August 2007. The plan is to have one berth open by end of 2007 and the whole terminal by October 2008.
Richard Heintzelman, President, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics Asia said: "The new Tianjin development is part of our regional strategy for building a sustainable logistics infrastructure in China. It supports our aim of providing a global integrated quality factory-to-dealer logistics service to our customers.
We intend to bring our worldwide expertise into the terminal. This is the first in a number of long-term investments we will be making within the region over the coming years.
We are excited about the opportunity to assist Chinese Customers with both their export and import needs by combining first-class terminal facilities with superior inland and award-winning ocean services.
Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics’ Ocean Services is already moving cargo to and from Tianjin, linking the port to our global network of services. We are now licensed to provide inland distribution as well as ocean transport, terminal handling, logistics and technical services in China," he concluded.
