Deutsche Bahn acquires a majority in Transfesa
Following the approval of the EU Commission, Deutsche Bahn can now take over the majority shares in the Spanish company Transportes Ferroviarios Especiales (Transfesa).

(3/19/2008)

"According to Norbert Bensel, DB’s management board member responsible for transportation & logistics, the deal will strengthen DB’s strategic activities in the sales regions of western Europe, particularly the Iberian peninsula, and customers will benefit primarily from the expansion of DB’s Europe-wide network for the automobile sector.

DB purchased the shares in Transfesa back in July 2007, but the transaction was subject to the approval of the competent authorities.

At the same time, DB also took over English Welsh & Scottish Railway (EWS).

The integration of EWS and Transfesa is intended to lead to a noticeable increase in the market share of rail in Europe over the medium-term, as well as an improvement in product quality.

Transfesa manager Luis del Campo believes that the participation of Deutsche Bahn will enable the Spanish transport company to pursue its international strategy."
