Cooperation between NordCargo and Railion Italia strengthens position in the Italian rail freight market
(Berlin, 17 September 2008) The DB Schenker subsidiary company, Railion Italia S.r.I., has today obtained the acceptance to acquire a 49 percent stake in Milan-based NordCargo S.r.I. NordCargo was spun off from its parent company, Ferrovienord S.P.A. (FNM), in 2003 and engages in cross-border rail transports on the North-South corridor running through Germany, Switzerland and Italy, as well as in Northwest Italy. In 2007 the company generated revenues of about € 34 million with 182 employees. The final contractual framework will be signed in the next days and is still pending until the responsible authorities have given their approval.
“The collaboration between Railion Italia and NordCargo will enable us to make better single-source offers to our customers in Northern Italy, as well as along the North South corridor,” said Dr. Norbert Bensel, who, as head of DB Schenker, is responsible for the Transport and Logistics division of DB Mobility Logistics AG. “We see numerous synergies between both companies and have now acquired the dimensions in the Italian market that will help us to develop our rail freight transport business at an even faster pace in Italy.”
DB had already acquired a 95 percent stake in Strade Ferrate del Mediterraneo (SFM), an Italian rail freight firm, in 2004 as part of its efforts to expand its European network. The company was subsequently renamed Railion Italia S.r.I. in 2005.
