Hamburg, November 20, 2003 – In the context of its strategic goal to strengthen contract logistics and overland activities across Germany, Kühne & Nagel (AG & Co.) has entered into a close collaboration and partnership with the WM-Group, a well positioned medium-sized logistics company based in Bocholt. At the same time, Kuehne & Nagel has acquired the WM-Group’s contract logistics operations in eastern Germany.

The WM logistics terminals in Chemnitz and Leipzig pass into Kuehne & Nagel’s ownership on January 1, 2004 and will be merged with the Kuehne & Nagel operations at these locations. Alongside Berlin, Dresden and Erfurt, they will form Kuehne & Nagel’s fast growing branch network in eastern Germany.

Furthermore, in the groupage business, Kuehne & Nagel will work closely with the WM-Group, an intention underlined through the purchase of a 40 per cent stake in WM Cargonet GmbH & Co. KG, Bocholt. The activities encompass system driven groupage in Germany and Europe, full and part truckloads, as well as sea and airfreight. WM Cargonet has branches in Bocholt, Chemnitz, Duisburg and Leipzig.

“After the acquisition of Pracht, the partnership with the WM-Group is a further step in our strategic objective to strengthen and expand the contract logistics and overland operations, in particular in eastern Germany,“ said Ewald Kaiser, the Managing Director of Kühne & Nagel (AG & Co.) KG. “The WM-Group is among the regional market leaders in overland transportation in attractive markets of North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony. By investing in this business we are able to further improve our service offerings.”

Matthias L?hr, who presides over the WM-Group together with his brother Hans-Wilhelm L?hr, sees advantages in the partnership for the two companies and their customers. “Kuehne & Nagel can benefit from our long standing expertise in the system driven groupage business as well as from our access to a national and international transportation network. In return, we open up new possibilities for our customers by working together with a partner that has a global network.”

The WM-Group is represented by offices and subsidiaries in Bocholt, Chemnitz, Duisburg and Leipzig and employs around 1,000 people in Germany.

The agreement is subject to the approval of various bodies. Both parties agreed not to disclose the purchase price.
