Deutsche Bahn’s bid for HHL and HHLA attracts rival interest
Following Deutsche Bahn’s bid to take over rail company Hamburger Hochbahn (HHL) and port operator Hamburger Hafen und Logistik (HHLA), AFX reports that Rhenus may launch a rival bid for both companies.

According to The Financial Times, international harbour operators such as Singapore’s PSA and Hong Kong’s Hutchison Whampoa are also interested in HHLA, while transport companies Abellio and Connex have already expressed an interested in Hamburger Hochbahn.

Deutsche Bahn’s takeover bid has met with considerable resistance, says the Financial Times, particularly from Switzerland’s Kuehne + Nagel.

Part of the Deutsche Bahn deal would require a shift of its company HQ from Berlin to Hamburg. Klaus-Michael Kuehne is reported to have said that if DB buys HHLA, Kuehne + Nagel will stop using Hamburg harbour. DB’s subsidiary, Schenker, is one of K+N’s biggest rivals.

According to Reuters, the German city state of Hamburg is negotiating with a number of investors over the sale of a stake in its port operator, and not just with Deutsche Bahn, although Hamburg finance senator Wolfgang Peiner was quoted as saying that DB still had priority in the talks, as he rejected the idea of international port operators buying a stake in HHLA.
